Here’s a different approach to origami. This model is made of strips of paper rather than a single paper or folded modules. It’s called a stamp machine (originally “Stampfmaschine” from German) because it can move - or more commonly known as “action model”. It consists of 16 cubes, each cube is made of 3 strips of paper, and everything is knotted together with more strips.
I used thicker paper (160g/m2) for the cubes because they had to be solid and normal paper (80g/m2) to knot them together. You’ll need 48 strips of 6 squares to make all the 16 cubes, 4 strips of 14 squares and 8 of 12 squares to knot them together (although the 14 and 12 square strips aren’t that accurate). You can get the diagrams/instructions to the cube here and the assembly here from Orihouse. A magnificent knotology by Heinz Strobl.
A few more pictures after the break.

Ok, the Stampfmaschine diagram on the linked site is totally unintelligible. Can u clarify a bit after to make it in three directions?
This is a more assemble as you go thing. The diagram on the site shows only one side of the stamp machine, the rest is exactly the same. As you can see from the picture I didn’t pay much attention to the assembly and some cubes are knotted differently.
For the cubes on this one do you just use the cubes that are used for the wobbling wall?
Yes they’re the same.
I really like this model and would like to make it, so sorry about all the questions :).
what do you do with the flaps that hang out of the cube?
I mean like, the little cubes you make after the witch’s ladder in the first link.
any help would be much appreciated.
You have to tuck them in, the cube holds together very well, but only if all the flaps are tucked in. You just have to lift up a bit one side so you can push the flap inside the cube. No parts should hang out of the cube.
can you make a video for the stamp machine???
where are the daigrams
@mysteryorigamiperson: there’s nothing really to show, once you make the cube you knot the cubes together… or do you want to see the completed model?
i cant understand the directions, would you make a video please?
Its just I cant understand the directions. I know people people have asked this but can you make a video? I dont udnerstand the directions.
@Chris: it’s probably because you’re unexperienced, once you do some easier models you’ll get the hand on it. If you would be more specific on what stage you’re struggling I might be able to help you.
this particularly magnificent, breathtaking action model will bring tears to your eyes as you drown in joy when you touch it.
is Karl the person who hosts this site?
@origami zachary: no, I’m not personally hosting the site, I don’t have static DNS and a computer to spare, but I’m the author of it.
cool
To be more specific…can you so a vid of you putting the cubed together for this model and for the wobbling wall of 9 cubes(if it’s the same don’t bother making another)
I think I get how to assemble this model. You have to wrap the fourteen square strip around one cube then knot them together. Am I right?
Sorry… I was wrong about the stamp machine in the first comment. The correct way is that (talking about one six-cubed side) on the left 2 cubes, the 14-square strip connects the two left cubes. You have to weave under/over like the diagram says. On the right side of the six-cubed surface are the strips used for knotting. Weave them like shown in the diagram. It should connect to the 14-square strip. Then just do the rest the same.
how to make it?
Like I said before, you weave the knot strips and the longest strips under and over the cubes’ strips. Just like how the diagrams told you to do.
you might also want to glue additional strips together to make a 14 square strip
wow!
Wow !…………………………..
But it was very hard.
But i like the origami you made.
Again I was wrong about the assembly. Instead of 48 strips there are 24 strips used, but still you can use 48 strips for thicker cubes. In the diagrams, the cubes with the red borders that are in the corners of the side faces(14 square knot strip) use one 6 square strip, and the 2 middle cubes with a green border(12 square knot strip), use two 6 square strips. It took me a long time to figure out the assembly, but I finally got it.
P.S. The colored rectangles in the corner cubes are either green Strips(12 square strips) or red strips(14 square strips)
Colored rectangles(not white, not border)left side of the side face corner cubes, (12 square strips)
colored rectangles( not white not border)right side of the side face corner cubes, (14 square strips).
P.S.S. I hope this helps.
P.S.S.S I’m not the host of origaminut, but I’m the host of origallery
I finished my stamp machine, but some of the cube strips keep falling out. I’ll try to post a picture and some hints on to my website.
Another east way to make this is non-origami but very easy. You make the 16 cubes from sixteen web layouts and just tape them together in the form of the last picture. Like I said… It’s much easier.
Yeah, but that kind of breaks some of the rules of origami.
