I took up Castword’s challenge and made an origami spring. At first I failed miserably, but the second try was already much better (on the picture). The origami spring takes a lot of time because it has to be completely creased before folding. When it comes to folding this model in one of the hardest, thanks again for Castword by pointing out a video of the creasing. I found it easier to fold each small flap separately rather than turn each level so that it would fall in place. A magnificent origami by Jeff Beynon.
Diagrams here and some more pictures and a video of somebody folding it after the break.
Here’s the spring compressed:

And now stretched:

And here’s my miserable failiure:

Nice result Karl! My first attempt looks like trash to. lol, but I’m going to try again, and hopefully I’ll get it right:)
Great job by the way!
lol. Nice job! I found this model but didn’t even know how to precrease it. Thanks a bunch.
But can you make a video of it on youtube??
one more thing is do the beginning of it, i cant do the triangle part.
@cuckoo: sure, but later, it took me about 2 hours (over 3 days) in total to make it so I’ll probably skip the creasing part… but what’s wrong with this video?
hi karl, this is a though one, i can’t get it fixed!!
tried several times but i can’t get the trick.
did u use just normal printing paper or something thicker?
greetz,
nice job by the way!!
@chrizz: I used normal printing paper, on the website and the video it seems he used thinner paper than normal, so I guess taking a thicker isn’t going to help.
well karl…….How do i found out about he beginning when i look at the diagram it all looks confused look just make the begging and thats all i want……..
is the paper half of a square one??????
no dude
Read the diagrams
If you can’t read diagrams you should start by learning that. The diagrams on the website are very clear, but thanks for pointing that out, I’ll add a new page which explains how to read diagrams.
Lol Karl your a nerd o.o;
i mean in a good way? =P
oh well ill try the diagram but if i succeed ill remind you karl that i did it happy?
If you make only a part of the whole structure it makes a cool cd case. Check out the Spiral Data Tato.

Wow, good find aaron.
I got all the creases, but how do you make those round things. The diagram and video don’t help.
This cheats how could this video help?
please make an easier videio for the spring
please make an easier videio for the origami spring
i’ve been trying it but i just can’t the spirals.
It took me forever to finally make this.
i don’t get how you did the first part
you have done a good job at harnessing kinetic and potential energy with origami.
I found an easier way to make 12 parts. Get an A4 format paper, then you fold it in half, then you fold the sides to the fold you just made. You have 4 parts now. Start putting 4 parts in each of the 4 folds, then cut 1/4 of the whole thing and you have 12 parts!
I actually was drowning in difficulty when i found the model in Robert J. Lang’s Origami in Action. this spring is very fine art! try wetfolding it. i might plan to do that toi mine i just made.
