After Dman’s request here’s the origami football (or soccer ball) by Mark Leonard. It’s made from 20 white pieces and 12 black pieces. Unfortunately it’s not very sturdy because of the pentagons having 2 flaps and 3 pockets for every module, this lets some gaps in the model. Other than that it’s great and looks like a traditional football.
I made the white hexagons from A6 format paper (that is an A4 cut in half twice). The black pentagons were a bit more difficult, 10.5cm in height (half an A4 in length) and 6.8cm in width, this is to make sure the hexagons’ and pentagons’ sides match.
In my model I used a thicker paper for the pentagons, this might be why it’s not very sturdy. Either way don’t try to kick it. The assembly has to be made in a specific way because of the pentagons, sometimes you’ll have to rotate a module to make others fit in, there are no extra flaps.
Diagrams here and video after the break.

Where do you position your camera when filming your videos?
@lizzieluvs_u: in front of my face on a tripod.
wow! incredible. Wonder if you can kick it…hehe Thanks! starting to fold right away
oh you wrote it in the description……. ops
can you please start doing origami again? You’ve been doing lots of paper craft lately.
@icebird: it’s called modular origami, origami made from multiple pieces, it’s not paper craft… well in a way it is, but it’s still origami.
he’s probably a purist
It’s hard to find nice origami made from a single sheet, Omega Star and the VW bug are my favorite because they’re made from a single piece of paper and look great… but it gets very complicated very quickly.
Yes im a partial purist(total purists will only fold single sheet models and wont cut but i just dont cut)isnt there cutting in it?
nope in this model, but the hexaflexagon is cut from a paper and glued, so thats the furthest you’ll ever get from origami hehe
Hey can you make from 3:20 more clear i can’t see that well
@cuckoo: that part is hard to show since the paper looks symmetrical at that place, please refer to the diagrams, they are very clear.
A complete purist believes: No cuts can be made, nor can the paper be modified in any way, a 3D model has to collapse into a 2D one, and no folds can be unfolded, thus the paper gets smaller and smaller. :(
Too Many Rules!
how do u get the shape??
Wow, this is a very nice module. It is a very creative origami paper ‘toy’. Nice job Karl and keep it up. Im going to try this module!
